The Daily Quote & Biggie Blog: Why 9-5 Will Never Work for You (And Why You Need to Pursue Your Crazy Idea)
Blazing trails - it ain't for sissies.
I sometimes envy people who are ok with a more normal life, taking the normal expected path. It seems less bumpy and more predictable. Options are fewer with the standard model.
Some of us - and you know who you are - can't do that kind of a life. Some of us have ideas - crazy or not - that we feel compelled to pursue.
Sometimes it's to our own seeming detriment.
But on we go, pursuing nonetheless.
If this is you, you've got to keep going.
The Workplace Misfits
If you've been raised to get a job, and that's the only option ever presented, you might not realize at first that it's not for you.
Others may whine about their jobs, but they don't feel the need to do anything else.
You might think there is something wrong with you for not fititng in to the workplace as others do.
It's not that there's something wrong with you.
It's just not what you're here to do.
It could be that you're an entrepreneur at heart. Or a speaker. Or a writer. Or artist or entertainer. Or maybe someone with a bigger message or a world-changing cause.
The 8-5 M-F life doesn't work for you.
It sucks the life right out of you. It kills your spirit.
You feel like you're wasting every working moment just to make a buck. And it seems that's all you're doing.
You don't see any other good coming from it.
You, my friend, need to pursue what's inside of you to do.
Listen Internally, Not Externally
Don't let the status quo pull you down.
Don't listen to the naysayers, the doomsdayers, the fear-mongers and the haters. Don't let them keep you from doing what's been placed in your heart and soul to do.
It took me 20 years in the corporate world to figure out why it was never a good fit. It wasn't me.
Well, it was. But not in that sense.
It was me, in that I wasn't designed to be there.
Although there were a few jobs and coworkers I really liked along the way, I was miserable for a whole lot of those two decades.
The workplace world and its restrictions, policies and games seemed ridiculous. I couldn't tolerate it.
Blazing My Own Trails
I had to try going it alone on my own. I've gone through a few iterations of me and my work, and there may be more to come.
I'm blazing trails and I've never been happier.
You know you're the same. You won't be happy if you settle, back down or quit.
You've got to see it through.
The Path Not Taken
It won't be easy.
Seldom will you see a definable path. You'll need to create your own.
You'll want to quit. Often.
You'll wonder if you're crazy for attempting it.
It seems impossible and so out of reach.
No one around you struggles in the same way.
Find Your Unique Tribe
They're not made of the same mold.
Your mold is one of a kind.
But there are many other one-of-a-kind molded people in the world.
We're all finding and making our own way.
You can, too.
Find your tribe of one-of-a-kinds. The ones who would never be happy with a 9-5.
The ones who feel a different pull.
The ones who have a passion of their own, a calling, a mission, an idea that begs their pursuit.
Bravely Go Where No One Has Gone Before
It won't be easy. It might be a lifelong endeavor.
But you know you won't ever really be happy unless you go after it.
Maybe it won't work out. That's ok, too.
You won't know until you attempt it. And your spirit won't rest until you try.
It will take courage. It does to go against the mainstream.
But you're not mainstream material.
You and your passion are unique.
It's been put in you to follow it. And so has the courage needed to go after it.
Be bold. Be brave.
You can do this.
You will do this.
You must do this.
The world is waiting.
