Crisp leaves, crisp air, and I'm sure crisp fall apples somewhere.
I don't know about where you are, but here in Colorado Springs, the cool air has moved in, and the leaves already peaked in their golden fall colors.
I have a love-hate relationship with fall. I hate seeing summer leave, but I love the colorfulness of this season.
Fall always sends me back to the first years of my life. It's weird how those memories haunt us sometimes.
My Favorite Halloween Costume
Like most seven-year-old kids, especially back in 1971, I lived to go trick-or-treating. I couldn't wait to get dressed up in my favorite Halloween costume.
It was a hand-me-down from our next door neighbors, but I loved it nonetheless. It was a little witches' costume, and it was adorable. The blackness of the costume was only interrupted by the bright orange yarn hair cascading down from the tall inky darkness of the witches' hat.
All I needed was a broom and a jet propulsion pack, and I could take on the town. Or at least the block.
Trick-or-Treating's Scariest Trick
I left home to go trick-or-treating as a fairly healthy, able-bodied little kid. By the time I limped home, my knees were the size of grapefruit.
The next morning, I was admitted to the hospital for three months while doctors tried to figure out what was wrong.
The diagnosis of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis changed my life forever.
The Good Treats (& Treatments) for Little Goblins
For me, it's been a long haul with JRA. The good news is, over these decades, I've gotten to see the huge improvements in treatment and diagnosis for cute little goblins who are affected.
Kids who are diagnosed today have a far greater prognosis. It's not as life altering for them, and I'm thankful. The big scary factors are no more.
They can expect to continue trick-or-treating, to run from scary monsters, and maybe find a secondhand broom to hop on and fly.
Back to the Future, Back to the Fun
It took me a few years, but I love Halloween again. It's a holiday as much for adults as it is for kids. It's a time for costumes and imagination and fun, just for fun's sake. As adults, we need that sometimes - like now would be good.
The tastes, the smells, the darkened evenings all add to the flavor of this season.
I couldn't resist curating a few Halloween goodies in my Zazzle.com store. Check them out through the link below. It was fun browsing through other designers' collections and pulling them into my own curated collection. I especially love the disco skeleton napkin. Who wouldn't??
And yes, all the images and items brought back memories. Good memories.
The kind that kids of all ages should hold dear.
And I do. I hope you do, too.
